After our morning exercise, play time, and integration with SJA, our friends decided to look at our first recipe- Sander's Salmon! We discussed and looked at how much fish we need (two), how big the fish should be (weight- 4-10 pounds, and length-15 cm), cost (approximately $50-60), how we can get money (chores, parents, jobs, loans, bake sale, toy sale), grocery store (No Frill's), how we will get to the grocery store (Mr. Nahi), and when (emailed Ms. Dawn). This was a great learning opportunity for social problem solving, life skills, number sense and numeracy, measurement, oral communication skills, language arts, turn taking, and team building.
Here we are writing an email to Ms. Dawn!
In gym class today we played a few warm up games and then a new version of Colour-Octopus Tag, as well as a fun animal relay race game. It was so much fun and everyone demonstrated great auditory processing skills, teamwork, social skills, sportsmanship, motor planning, body mapping, sequencing, gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, and balance and coordination.
Here is Mr. Carter and Mr. Ruben helping us set up for our Mindfulness session.
In the afternoon we decided to see if Ms. Dawn emailed us back. She did indeed respond to our email, and said that Mr. Nahi could bring us tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. We then realized that we did not give Ms. Dawn and Mr. Nahi a time or date. As a class, we decided that perhaps tomorrow afternoon will work!
After our cooking discussion, emailing Ms. Dawn, and finishing our title page for our cooking books, we decided to have fun with drama. Friends had to act out specific situations with a peer, while the rest of the group had to try and guess what they were doing (e.g. customer at the grocery store and clerk, swimming teacher and student, etc.)We did so well together using oral communication skills, turn taking, role-play, creative and abstract thinking, problem solving skills, and complex communication skills.
At ehe very end of the day we played a great Guessing Game that utilized our visual spatial skills, fine and gross motor skills, creative skills, social skills, bilateral coordination, motor planning, and turn taking. One peer is chosen/volunteers to leave the room for a minute before the game begins. Next, we then had to sit in a circle and one friend, who was the "pack leader", led everyone through different actions and everyone else has to copy (e.g. hand clapping). The friend who left the classroom then comes back and watches his peers change motions as a group. They get three guesses to figure out who is the leader!
HOEMWORK:
1) Work on two and three-digit addition and subtraction questions, whether you write down some questions for your child, or use math to cook, clean, set the table, do chores, play games, create a game, etc.
2) Discuss good and poor sportsmanship. Use examples and pictures, videos, role-play, etc. Also, discuss big/medium/small problems and have your child make a chart showing where they think specific incidents should fall under.
3) Spend 15 minutes reading a book of your child's choice, a cartoon, instructions, recipe, comic strip, etc. Make reading fun, engaging, an adventure, and not a boring chore.
