The day began with some discussion and reflection on how our first day went, a silly name game, and socializing with our TAs. Afterwards, we went outside for our morning exercise. We played "Snow Ball Fight", where friends had to run around a specific area. Once they heard, "snow ball fight!" they had to throw snowballs and duck and run away from snowballs. The snowballs were scrunched up paper balls that had questions written on them. This game was great to help regulate the students and demonstrate great body and muscle awareness, proprioceptive, vestibular and bilateral movements, fine and gross motor skills, motor planning, auditory processing, social problem solving, oral and two way communication skills, and questioning skills.
After our morning exercise Ms. Lizzie was our teacher today. She went over the month, date, day, year, weather, time, and feelings. Then we went over some Get to Know Me worksheets with our friends and worked on our writing and fine motor skills.
Before gym class we also got to practice tying our shoes and some fine motor work on the Geoboards. everyone did very well and demonstrated great concentration, patience, and determination.
In gym class today we played Scooter board Capture the Flag with our friends in Ms. Andrea's and Ms. Jessica's class. Everyone demonstrated great auditory processing skills, hand-eye coordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, and balance and coordination.
During our "Mindfulness" today we used a fun exercise involving frogs to work on calming exercises, deep breathing, stretching, drama, and regulation. Afterwards, we went on a magical journey through a forest, river, and climbed snowy mountains while listening to a relaxing narrative.
One of our friends had an accident at lunch but did an excellent job finding the mop, wet floor sign, and cleaning up the mess. Great work!
The afternoon started with two activities from our "Thinking Goes to School" (TGTS) book/pedagogy. Students played a fun rhythm-pattern-math-fine motor-bilateral movement-gross motor-auditory movement communication game called "Clap Patterns". One person makes a pattern with their hands and the rest of the group follows. Patterns and movements get more and more complex with more difficult motions and faster repetitions.
We also played another game from TGTS called "Operation" and "Body Lifts". Both games are great for body awareness, body mapping, bilateral movements, crossing the midline, and being aware of both sides of the body and using the left and right hemispheres in unison.
In the sensory gym we worked on our hand-eye coordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, motor planning, body mapping and awareness, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, math, time, phonics and rhyming skills, and balance and coordination.
At the end of the day our friends we decided to participate in Play Master for the next activity. This is such a great exercise for time management skills, number sense and numeracy, multiplication, time, problem solving, turn taking, oral communication skills, social skills, play skills, and creativity. Everyone had to decide who got to go first, how much time each student got in a 25 minute duration to lead their friends in play, and then choose which activities/ games they wanted to carry out.
Lastly, we went over our Zones of Regulation and used different coloured blocks to symbolize how our day was, and how different times of the day went. We also got to share our own ideas and thoughts on how our day went, and took turns saying one nice thing about our friends from today's work.
Have great evening everyone and please DO NOT FORGET YOUR BBQ ORDER FORM AND MONEY tomorrow!
Mr. Jacob : )
