We began our October day by some of our friends going over their new Sensory Diets! Then, as a class, we went over our morning message, discussed what we did on the weekend, and changed our calendar to October.
Here we are fixing Mr. Jacob's morning message.
Mr. Ojani is pictured below quietly completing his math work in Ms. Jaskolka's class at SJA.
Elizabeth is finishing her work on "A Real Life Hero" from last week's lesson on Fictional and Non-Fictional Heroes.
After some work we had time to play Charades before snack! : )
Today in Gym class Mr. Matt (TA in Ms. Jessica's class) and Ms. Balroop (TA in Mr. Jacob's class) led the students through a fun silly breathing exercise, a variation of What Time Is It Mr. Wolf, and a new Dodgeball Game. Everyone demonstrated great auditory processing skills, hand-eye coordination, teamwork, social skills, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, and balance and coordination.
Today was our first Girls Club with students from Mr. Foster's and Ms. Smith's Grade 1 classes! Everyone had so much putting on a fashion show and then colouring and making pictures together. The girls demonstrated social skills, life skills, two-way oral communication skills, creativity and abstract thinking, and team work.
During our "Mindfulness" today we used a fun exercise involving spaghetti exercises to work on calming down our bodies, deep breathing, stretching, drama, and regulation. Afterwards, we went on a magical journey through a forest, river, climbed snowy mountains, listened to birds and the sound of leaves, while listening to a relaxing narrative and being exposed to sensory stimuli.
After lunch we had two different groups join Ms. Christine for Music Therapy. Our students are working on expressing themselves through music, keeping a beat (time, rhythm, mathematics, sequencing, motor planning, fine motor skills, symbolic thinking, etc.), and having fun! We also spent some time completing our individual reading assessments from the DRA program.
Feeling Zen! Haha
In the sensory gym we worked on our hand-eye coordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, math, time, phonics and rhyming skills, and balance and coordination.
At the end of the day we went over patterns and designs. We looked at basic AB patterns, and then immediately progressed to ABC, ABBC, AABC, and various other combinations. After we discussed the different patterns we then used toilet paper rolls and paint to create Olympic patterned art for our Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday.
Have a great evening and I shall see everyone tomorrow!
HOMEWORK TIPS:
1) Look at, discuss, search for, create and expand on patterns you see in every day life. Whether that may be shapes, numbers, daily chores, music, art pieces, wallpaper borders, tiles, bed sheets, pillow cases, textiles, rugs and carpets, etc.
2) Continue working on two-digit addition and subtraction questions, whether you write down some questions for your child, or use math to cook, clean, set the table, do chores, play games, create a game, etc.
3) Help your child love to read by making it fun and exciting. Instead of only using books, read maps, cartoons, comics, recipes, game instructions, etc. to keep reading fun, exciting, and less of a chore!
Mr. Jacob : )
