The day began with some Olympic training outside on the soccer field. We participated in some 300 m, 400 m and long jump events!
We measured our jumps in centimetres by using a tap measure.
Long Jump!
Cha Cha Cha Cha Cha CHA!
After our morning training on the soccer field everyone wanted some quiet reading time. Yes, that is correct. Run your child and have them jump like crazy and then they will want to read haha.
A little reading group
Just relaxing!
Here we are reading a fun Halloween/ Thanksgiving book.
Ojani reading to Ms. Josephine
Mr. Zachary was our teacher today and went over the month, date, day, year, weather, time, and feelings.
After snack and recess everyone completed a fine motor/ visual-spatial scanning exercise. Students had to locate specific numbers amongst a large random group of numbers, and then record how long it took them. This is a great exercise for visual spatial awareness, visual scanning, fine motor skills, and math skills.
Today in Gym class Mr. Matt (TA in Ms. Jessica's class) and Ms. Balroop (TA in Mr. Jacob's class) led the students in Coloured Octopus and Dodgeball. Everyone demonstrated great auditory processing skills, hand-eye coordination, teamwork, social skills, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, and balance and coordination.
During our "Mindfulness" today we used a fun exercise involving spaghetti exercises to work on calming down our bodies, deep breathing, stretching, drama, and regulation. Afterwards, we listened to a story about our bodies moving through space. Mindfulness helps our body and mind relax, regulate, and prepare themselves for the rest of the day.
After lunch most of the boys were active participants in a social problem solving process. There is still confusion over rules for Freeze Tag. It took us quite some time to be able to state our case, listen to others, and come up with a solution. In the end, we had some great conversation and decided to re-write the rules and then hand them out to classes to see if everyone agrees on the rules. This is still a work in process and we shall see what the end result will be! This was great for turn taking, social skills, problem solving, two way communication skills, opening and closing circles of communication, listening skills, logical thinking, writing and language arts skills.
Ms. Elizabeth and Mr. Carter read a book about verbs, and then used pictures of Olympic athletes to act out different action words!
The class going over nouns, adjectives, and action words (verbs). Everyone did very well listening attentively (auditory processing) and answering questions (comprehension and application skills).
In the sensory gym we worked on our hand-eye coordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, math, time, phonics and rhyming skills, and balance and coordination. Everyday we bring in our practice clock, and also use phonics games, rhyming games, and two-digit addition and subtraction while in the gym!
At the very end of the day we went over the parts of a story: characters, setting, problem(s), events, and solution(s). We then got into groups and made our own characters using costumes and props, and then had to come up with a setting, events, a problem and a solution. This will be a work in progress but we displayed some great creative skills, turn taking, team work, social skills, role playing, drama skills, and oral communication skills.
Have a great evening and I will see everyone tomorrow!
HOMEWORK:
1) Discuss/read/create a story and use the 5 Finger Retelling Method:
2) Continue working on two-digit addition and subtraction questions, whether you write down some questions for your child, or use math to cook, clean, set the table, do chores, play games, create a game, etc.
3) Discuss what nouns, adjectives, and verbs are by making a visual sentence using pictures from magazines, drawings, etc. and words. Example: The BOAT (cut out a picture of a boat for the noun) SAILs (use a picture of a sail for the verb) out into the DEEP, BLUE water (use a picture of something deep and blue for the adjectives). Have your child also write out the sentence (s).
