We began our Wednesday by deciphering and correcting Mr. Jacob's morning message. Everyone used great problem solving skills, language arts skills, team work and turn taking to complete the task. During our morning circle we also demonstrated some addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills when being questioned about dates on our calendar. Mr. Avery was our teacher today and went over the month, date, day, year, weather, time, and feelings.
Today in SJA gym class we discussed speed and velocity, and static and dynamic. Next, we played a fun game utilizing our auditory processing skills, memory skills, and body awareness and mapping. Everyone demonstrated great auditory processing skills, hand-eye coordination, teamwork, social skills, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, and balance and coordination.
Mr. Carter and Ms. Elizabeth having some fun play time!
Here we have Mr. Eric and Mr. Sander presenting the Freeze Tag rules that our class brainstormed and wrote down. Ms. Andrea's and Ms. Kylie's classes both agreed to ur terms, and today was our first recess with the new rules!
Our rules being implemented on the Sport Court.
After snack and recess everyone participated in a fine motor task of tying our shoes. We have seen progress already and I cannot wait for the day when I, Mr. Jacob, no longer have to tie my own shoes! Haha : )
Before our first SJA Track and Field practice, we decided to play Head Bands. This is a fun TGTS game where everyone has to use inferencing, questioning, abstract thinking, problem solving, turn taking, oral communication, categorization, classification, time and social skills. The first track practice went very well and all the boys did very well! This track team consists of Grades 2-4.
During our "Mindfulness" today we worked on calming exercises, deep breathing, stretching, drama, and regulation. Afterwards, we went on a magical journey through a forest, river, climbed snowy mountains, listened to birds and the sound of leaves and waves, while listening to a relaxing narrative and being exposed to sensory stimuli
Immediately after lunch the boys, Ms. Allison (SLP Therapist), our TAs and I had to solve a social problem. There was some confusion on the playground involving trades and what Pokemon cards belonged to who? I was so impressed and proud of how everyone conducted themselves, listened to their peers' side of things, engaged in back and forth conversation, and settled the problem peacefully with smiles and handshakes! Way to go gentlemen! : )
After lunch we went over nouns, adjectives, and action words (verbs) using Olympic athletes. Everyone did very well listening attentively (auditory processing) and answering questions (comprehension and application skills) while engaging in the book we used on verbs. Moreover, we also chose a picture and wrote out a sentence relating to the actions of the athlete.
In the sensory gym we worked on our hand-eye coordination, teamwork, sportsmanship, motor planning, fine and gross motor skills, proprioception skills, vestibular and bilateral movements, math, time, phonics and rhyming skills, and balance and coordination. Everyday we bring in our practice clock, and also use phonics games, rhyming games, and two-digit addition and subtraction while in the gym! While some of us went to the sensory gym, the other group worked on our sentences that had nouns and verbs, as well as a Questioning Game (What's In The Bag?) and some Bingo (math skills).
At the very end of the day we yet again went over the parts of a story: characters, setting, problem(s), events, and solution(s). We then got into groups and made our own characters using costumes and props, and then had to come up with a setting, events, a problem and a solution. This will be a work in progress but we displayed some great creative skills, turn taking, team work, social skills, role playing, drama skills, and oral communication skills.
Have a great sunny Wednesday evening and I shall see everyone tomorrow!
HOMEWORK TIPS:
1) Discuss/read/create a story and use the 5 Finger Retelling Method:
2) Continue working on two-digit addition and subtraction questions, whether you write down some questions for your child, or use math to cook, clean, set the table, do chores, play games, create a game, etc.
3) Discuss what nouns, adjectives, and verbs are by making a visual sentence using pictures from magazines, drawings, etc. and words. Example: The BOAT (cut out a picture of a boat for the noun) SAILs (use a picture of a sail for the verb) out into the DEEP, BLUE water (use a picture of something deep and blue for the adjectives). Have your child also write out the sentence (s).
4) Spend 15 minutes reading a book of your child's choice, a cartoon, instructions, recipe, comic strip, etc. Make reading fun, engaging, an adventure, and not a boring chore.
Mr. Jacob
